It all started when…

I read Jorge Amado’s books about Bahia, Brazil at age 11. He talked about the Yoruba people who had impacted the city with their language, food, orixas, and culture, and I started reading and reading. After getting a Ph.D. in African art history at Indiana University, I moved to Nigeria for five years and kept coming back, even after I began teaching at Cleveland State University. Lots of things I discovered had nothing to do with art history, but I wanted to share them, so a passageway to the world of fiction opened.
